With dual degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering, Walter provides strategic advice to large corporations, academic institutions and start-up companies in the development of their patent portfolios and freedom to operate. His practice includes patent prosecution and patent post grant proceedings, litigation, infringement and invalidity opinions, client counseling such as design-around advice and competitive monitoring and analysis, due diligence studies, licensing, and patent prosecution. Walter's patent post-grant experience includes over 25 reexamination proceedings and appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board. He has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications for high profile pipeline and commercial products.
He works with clients in a wide range of technologies, including the cutting-edge integration of health care and medical devices, software, electronics and telecommunications, such as medical imaging, including cardiac/tissue elastography, electromechanical wave imaging, fluorescent analyte excitation, nonlinear/quantum optics, such as metaphotonics and plasmonics, wearable technologies and sensors, robotics, implantable prostheses, data integration and processing, optical computing, and diagnostics.
In addition, Walter has litigated numerous patents in diverse technologies, including imaging devices and pharmaceutical syringes, semiconductors, wireless communications, medical device patents and chemical vapor deposition processes.
Walter previously served as in-house patent counsel at Philips Electronics North America Corporation. In that capacity, he negotiated and drafted license agreements, including industry-wide cross-license agreements, and prepared and prosecuted over 100 patent applications. Before attending law school, Walter worked as a flight controls engineer with Grumman Corporation, concentrating in flight simulation, flight test, automated carrier landing systems, and digital control systems for several programs of the U.S. Navy.
