Reed Smith’s Copyright Termination Bootcamp: Reclaiming Rights, Unlocking Value and Navigating Risk

Copyright termination rights can present significant opportunities for artists, songwriters, and other creators to reclaim valuable rights in their works, while creating important considerations for companies acquiring, investing in or managing music catalogs and other creative assets.

Tuesday, December 8, 2026

6-7 p.m. in your local time

Join Reed Smith’s Entertainment & Media Group for a practical examination of the U.S. copyright termination framework, including how these rights can be identified, exercised, valued, and addressed in commercial transactions. Whether you are seeking to recover rights in valuable works, evaluating an investment in intellectual property, or advising creators or their estates, understanding copyright termination is essential to protecting and maximizing the value of creative assets.

Our international team will offer practical insights into copyright termination rights in the United States, as well as copyright reversion and related rights in the UK and other jurisdictions.

Topics will include:

  • Opportunities for authors and heirs: Identifying potentially recoverable copyrights, evaluating the benefits of termination, and developing strategies to reclaim, renegotiate or monetize rights.
  • Music catalog acquisitions and investments: Assessing termination exposure in due diligence, understanding implications for asset valuations, and addressing termination risks in deal structuring and documentation.
  • Navigating the termination process: Eligibility requirements, statutory timelines, notice procedures, common pitfalls and strategies for both authors and existing rights holders.
  • Maximizing the value of recovered rights: Commercial considerations surrounding ownership, licensing, administration and potential sales or other transactions following termination.
  • Estate and succession planning: Identifying copyright termination rights as potentially valuable assets, understanding who is entitled to exercise those rights following an author’s death, and incorporating termination considerations into estate and succession planning.
  • Termination rights in divorce and marital settlement agreements: Assessing whether termination rights are marital property, how they are valued and divided, and how to address them in settlement agreements.
  • International considerations: Understanding key differences between U.S. copyright termination rights and reversion regimes in the UK and other jurisdictions.

We look forward to welcoming you. If there are questions or issues you would like our speakers to address, please let us know in advance.
