PHILADELPHIA — Global law firm Reed Smith today announced that James M. “Jim” Beck has received the DRI Drug and Medical Device (DMD) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant and lasting contributions to the defense of the drug and medical device industry.

DRI — Association of Lawyers Defending Business — is the largest international membership organization of attorneys defending the interests of business and individuals in civil litigation. The DRI DMD Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual whose career-spanning work has had a profound impact on the defense of prescription medical product liability litigation.

Beck, a senior life sciences policy analyst in the firm’s Global Commercial Disputes Group based in Philadelphia, was recognized for his decades of leadership in drug and medical device defense, his innovative contributions to defense strategy, and his widely acclaimed Drug and Device Law Blog, one of the most respected and widely read legal blogs in the prescription medical product field.

A 40-year veteran of product liability defense, Beck has devoted his career to developing and advancing novel strategies, such as Buckman preemption and “snap” removal, for the defense of prescription medical product litigation. He is the co-creator of the Drug and Device Law Blog, which has become an indispensable resource for practitioners, in-house counsel, and industry professionals navigating the evolving landscape of pharmaceutical and device litigation.

In connection with the award, at DRI’s 2026 Drug and Medical Device Seminar, Beck delivered a session titled “A Baker’s Dozen Bright Career Ideas From ‘Bexis’,” in which he distilled four decades of experience into a discussion of his best and most impactful ideas for improving the defense of prescription medical product liability litigation.

Beck’s receipt of the DRI Lifetime Achievement Award completes a unique trifecta of recognition from major defense organizations. Beck previously won similar lifetime awards from the Product Liability Advisory Council (John P. Raleigh Award, 2011) and Lawyers for Civil Justice (Founder’s Award 2025).

“Jim’s recognition by DRI is a testament to a career defined by excellence, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to advancing the defense of drug and medical device litigation,” said Jim Hultquist, co-chair of the Global Commercial Disputes Group. “His thought leadership, both in the courtroom and through his influential blog, has shaped the way the defense bar approaches these critical matters. This honor is richly deserved.”
