Radiology AI: the Regulatory Risks are Already Here

Artificial intelligence (AI) is deployed in radiology practices across the country, governed by a regulatory framework that predates the technology. Radiologists and practice administrators looking to adopt or expand AI must navigate rules that were never written for it but still present substantial risk.

In a recent article for the Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA) Bulletin, I explain how existing health care laws already establish much of the framework for deploying AI in radiology, including why AI does not eliminate the need for human oversight, governance, and compliance controls. The piece offers practical guidance for navigating those risks.

The bottom line is that regulatory risk already attaches to AI at every stage of the radiology workflow. Before practices deploy these tools for efficiency, they should be prepared to answer for how they're used.
