Walter advises across the full lifecycle of innovation, from early-stage portfolio development through product launch and beyond. He provides strategic counsel on patent portfolio management, freedom-to-operate analyses, and risk assessment, including infringement and invalidity positions, design-around strategies, competitive monitoring, licensing, and transaction-related due diligence. His approach focuses on enabling clients to make informed, business-aligned decisions while preserving flexibility as technologies and markets evolve.
He has substantial experience in patent prosecution and post-grant proceedings, including more than 25 reexaminations and appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications supporting high-value pipeline and commercial products and brings an integrated perspective that connects prosecution strategy with downstream enforcement and freedom-to-operate considerations.
Walter’s work spans a broad range of technologies. He regularly advises clients in software, telecommunications, robotics, including AI-enhanced technologies; consumer products; medical devices and healthcare, including medical imaging, wearable sensors, implantable prostheses, and diagnostics; as well as optics and photonics, including nonlinear and quantum optics. His technical background enables him to engage directly with engineers and scientists and translate complex concepts into clear, actionable legal strategies. He also has experience supporting patent disputes across diverse technologies, including imaging systems, pharmaceutical delivery devices, semiconductors, wireless communications, medical devices, and chemical vapor deposition processes.
Before entering the legal profession, Walter worked as a mechanical and aerospace engineer on advanced flight control, simulation, and testing systems for U.S. Navy programs—experience that continues to inform his practical, technology-focused approach.
