Bitcoin and its underlying technology for maintaining a secure distributed ledger (known as “blockchain”) has attracted a great deal of attention. Specialized “bitcoin companies” provide various transaction and cryptographic services for bitcoin transactions while larger financial institutions and technology companies are exploring ways to use blockchain technology for currency transactions and other applications. This study analyzes this ecosystem through publicly available patent data. The study uncovers the emerging players, their roles, and investment trends in this emerging technology space.
