(December 7, 2012, PALO ALTO)—Corporate attorney Judy Deng has joined Reed Smith’s Silicon Valley office, where she will focus on cross-border U.S.-China transactions and corporate financings of companies with international operations.

Prior to joining Reed Smith, Ms. Deng was an attorney in Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman’s Silicon Valley office, where she focused on private equity and venture capital financings, Chinese RMB fund formations and M&A.

“We’re grateful to have such a rising star join our China team in the Valley,” says Catharina Min, managing partner of the firm’s office in Palo Alto. “Judy’s wealth of experience, intellect and energy are a tremendous asset for our Chinese and China-facing clients.”

With more than 150 lawyers among its offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, Reed Smith has one of the largest profiles in the PRC of any international firm. Last month, the firm continued its overseas expansion in Asia by opening in Singapore. Reed Smith opened its office in Shanghai, China’s largest city, in July 2011.

Reed Smith also has a strong Asia-focused presence in California, with Catharina Min also serving as Korea practice leader and John Iino, the firm’s Los Angeles managing partner, serving as the Japan practice leader. China practice leader Jinshu "John" Zhang is also based in the firm’s Los Angeles and Silicon Valley offices.

“I was particularly attracted to Reed Smith for its multifaceted three-city presence in both China and California, as well as its focus on client service,” says Deng. “The firm’s unique global platform and insider Valley acumen makes it the perfect place to further my client relationships.”

Deng has a great deal of experience with Valley-China startups, and has advised on a number of strategic and venture financings with complex international corporate structures. Deng is also a recognized expert in the Valley for advising U.S.-China fund managers on structuring Renminbi funds and their portfolio investments. Inbound projects Deng has taken the lead on include serving as U.S. counsel to prestigious China-headquartered multinationals, ranging from consumer appliance to medical device companies.

Prior to her time at Pillsbury, Deng worked out of the Greater China offices of two other global law firms. She received her LL.M. (Master of Laws) from UC Berkeley School of Law in 2002, and her J.D. and LL.M. in International Business Law from the Fudan University School of Law in Shanghai, which is one of the oldest and most selective universities in China.
