Reed Smith is embarking on an expansion of its international arbitration practice globally, and in April, the highly regarded, seven-lawyer arbitration team from Astigarraga Davis joined Reed Smith and opened the firm’s Miami office. The new team adds strength to the firm’s already-existing strong Latin American international arbitration capabilities, which include Houston-based partner Cisco Rivero, and recently added William Russell, who joined the Houston office with particular experience in the energy sector.
The incorporation of the Latin America-focused Astigarraga team enables Reed Smith to expand its international arbitration practice in the region, but especially the firm’s leading investor-state practice, which up to now has been concentrated in other regions.
Belinda Paisley, the head of the firm’s investor-state practice, noted: “Latin America has many investor-state disputes, so the addition of the Astigarraga arbitration team is a win-win. With Reed Smith’s depth of experience in investor-state claims, and with the Astigarraga team’s experience and reputation in the region, we now have an excellent opportunity to serve our clients’ needs in investor-state disputes in Latin America.”
José Astigarraga, who has now assumed the global leadership of the firm’s international arbitration practice, added: “The Latin American region is a key part of the firm’s plans to grow its arbitration practice globally. We’re delighted to be a finalist for such an honor for the region.”
The awards will be held September 15 at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, Florida.
