“Betty Yan has garnered a reputation for her dealmaking skill, depth of legal knowledge, and creative approach to achieving her clients’ business goals,” said Diane Bettino, Reed Smith’s Princeton office managing partner. “She has also paved the way for many young women and diverse associates throughout her career, providing guidance, leadership and sharing her experiences. We’re thrilled that she has been recognized by the New Jersey Law Journal for her professional achievements and commitment to the profession.”
A member of the Reed Smith Global Corporate Group, Betty was among the few diverse women attorneys who were working in the life sciences industry sector when she began her law career. She is a trusted legal advisor to a number of global biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on cross-border transactions, joint ventures, corporate governance matters, licensing agreements, and other industry-specific agreements. Over the past year, she led large diverse teams that successfully completed significant transactions for Acrotech Biopharma LLC, G&W Laboratories, and other major biotechnology and pharmaceutical clients.
Betty is also widely regarded for her skill as a negotiator in complex transactions and her ability to provide creative solutions on a wide range of operational matters. She recently resolved a major contracting issue for a client that involved building a database managed by contract attorneys at Reed Smith. The process has been replicated and is now being used by other firm clients.
Working with the Reed Smith Innovation team in 2020, Betty headed up the development of a technological innovation for a global pharmaceutical company. Leading a collaboration with the client to resolve its need to manage dozens of R&D contracts while reducing its legal spend, Betty and the team arrived at a solution that automated the company’s clinical trial contracts, provided full transparency, and significantly decreased contract turnaround times. Betty was selected to the New Jersey Law Journal’s list of 2020 “New Jersey Trailblazers” based on her work in helping to develop the solution.
“It is gratifying to be recognized by New Jersey Law Journal,” Betty said. “This year’s list of honorees are talented and dedicated practitioners, and I’m honored to be selected alongside them.”
Betty is also known to be a dedicated and thoughtful mentor, and has devoted countless hours throughout her career to providing career guidance and leadership to women and diverse attorneys, many of whom have advanced to partnership or gone on to in-house counsel roles.
