Lou joined Reed Smith in 1997 and is a partner in the firm's Global Commercial Disputes Group in the Philadelphia office. He is a trial attorney with first-and second-chair trial experience in both federal and state courts. Lou has successfully defended major public and private companies in complex commercial cases and has won jury and non-jury defense verdicts on behalf of these clients. He also has extensive arbitration experience and has successfully briefed and argued civil appeals before state and federal appellate courts.
With nearly 20 years of broad-based legal experience, Lou has a diverse practice. He has represented a variety of clients, including financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies, energy companies and medical device manufacturers in complex, multistate litigations, involving consumer class action, mass tort, product liability and personal injury matters. More recently, Lou has developed substantial experience with lawsuits involving products (oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, xylene, and a variety of other solvents) that allegedly contained harmful levels of benzene. Lou has also managed, designed and implemented the protocol and strategy in connection with vast e-discovery collections and productions and has counseled clients on appropriate preservation policies, legal holds and internal protocols.
Lou remains active in his community serving as a board member for the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Philadelphia & Vicinity, a board member for the Upper Uwchlan Township Municipal Authority, and as vice president of the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association. He also previously served as a senior hearing committee member for the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Lou coaches recreational youth soccer in his spare time.
