Most recently a partner in the New York tax practice at Katten Muchin Rosenman, Ciavarella had been a partner at Reed Smith from 2008 to 2016.
“The firm’s transactional corporate and tax practice has grown significantly since I left,” Ciavarella said. “Returning to a growing, vibrant group provides an opportunity for me to work on diverse transactions on a domestic and international level. That is a very exciting proposition for my practice and Reed Smith’s collaborative culture is a great match for my style of practice. I am excited to join a great team and a great group of people.”
Ciavarella’s practice focuses on structuring domestic and cross-border corporate, private equity, capital market and real estate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions and divestures, tax-free reorganizations, partnership and other joint ventures, restructurings, leveraged buyouts, financing transactions and other commercial transactions.
“Angelo is widely respected for providing exceptional tax counsel to clients in the industry sectors in which our firm has a core focus,” said James Tandler, Chair, U.S. Corporate Group and Co-Chair, Global Corporate Group. “His experience in the mid-market, which is the firm’s sweet spot, will be an asset to our teams providing counsel to the entrepreneurial businesses in this sector, where Reed Smith is continuing to expand its client base.”
Before joining Reed Smith in 2008, he had been counsel at Sidley Austin; an associate at Skadden, Arps; the Manager of Tax Planning at Moore Capital Management; and associate at Cooper & Lybrand. A 1993 graduate of California Western School of Law, Ciavarella earned a Master of Laws degree in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1994.
“Angelo brings us corporate transactional tax capabilities that are currently in demand in this market and globally,” said Cindy Schmitt Minniti, Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s New York office. “He will help us compete at the highest level on the increasingly complex transactions in today’s economy. We are delighted to welcome him back to the firm and to this office.”
Ciavarella is the seventh partner to join Reed’s Smith’s Global Corporate Group in 2020. Adela Mues joined the group in the firm’s Dubai office earlier this month; Nigel Stark joined the group in the firm’s new Dallas office last week; and the firm added a five-partner corporate team to its new Brussels office in January. Other recent additions to the Global Corporate Group in New York include partners Tadaski Okamoto and Sandy K. Feldman who joined in late 2019.
