Reed Smith is pleased to announce that Benton Burroughs, Jr., a senior partner in its Global Corporate Group, has been named to the 2022 class of the Virginia Lawyers Hall of Fame, presented by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Burroughs will be honored at a special event March 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the John Marshall Ballroom in Richmond. Profiles of the honorees will appear in a special section in the Feb. 28 issue of Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Burroughs has been the primary outside investment and securities counsel for the Virginia Retirement System since 1995. He represented VRS in more than 600 private equity transactions and numerous SWAP transactions, exceeding $90 billion in value. He joined the firm in 1989.

Burroughs also represented South Carolina Retirement System in more than 75 transactions in the Private Equity and Real Estate Private Equity Funds where they are an investor. Burroughs also has done more than 70 transactions for the San Jose Pension Funds in Private Equity in real estate, as well as big private equity funds, hedge funds and investment management contracts. In addition, Burroughs represented Contra Costa County Employees’ Retirement Association in more than 100 transactions.

The Virginia Lawyers Hall of Fame award celebrates esteemed members of Virginia’s legal community who have reached the age of 60 or older for their lasting contributions to the legal field across the commonwealth of Virginia. Honorees have made their mark in the courtroom or the boardroom, in their firms and with community organizations, and with local, state and national bar associations, VLW says.
