Paul practices principally in the area of commercial restructuring and bankruptcy. He is the founder of the firms corporate reorganization practice and chaired the section for more than 20 years. Paul represents both debtors and creditors. He has appeared in bankruptcy courts around the country and has acted as lead counsel in a number of major out-of-court workouts. He has also acted for purchasers and sellers of businesses, both in and out of bankruptcy, and has served as a court-appointed Chapter 11 trustee and bankruptcy mediator.

Representative matters

Served as lead bankruptcy counsel in the mass tort chapter 11 cases of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation and Metex Manufacturing Corporation. He also was lead bankruptcy counsel on the asbestos-related chapter 11 cases of Durabla Manufacturing Corporation, Hercules Chemical Corporation, North American Refractories Company (“NARCO”), Harbison-Walker Refractories Company, A.P. Green Industries, Inc., Rapid-American Corporation, Oakfabco, Inc., Geo. V. Hamilton, and The Fairbanks Company.
Represented the following debtors in steel and mining related Chapter 11 cases: Mesta Machine Company, Wean Industries, Inc., Songer Corporation, The Carbide/Graphite Group, Inc., Levinson Steel Company and Franklin Industries, Inc.
Represented the following creditors’ committees in steel and mining related Chapter 11 cases: Birmingham Steel, Inc., Geneva Steel, Inc., LTV Steel Co., Inc., National Steel, Inc., Republic Engineered Products, Rouge Industries, Inc., WCI Steel, Inc., Aleris International, Inc., Eveleth Mines, and US Metal Source Corporation
