Steven is a seasoned litigator and trusted advisor with more than 30 years’ experience representing some of the firm’s largest clients. He has handled and supervised teams of lawyers in thousands of cases and has extensive experience in all aspects of complex litigation—from initial pleadings through jury trial. Steven most recently represented a major wholesale pharmaceutical distributor at trial, defending against claims that prescription opioids presented a statewide public nuisance.
Steven has represented many of the world’s largest manufacturers in commercial and consumer-facing litigation, including product liability, toxic tort, and public nuisance cases. He has particular experience in mass litigation involving talc, asbestos, prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, orthopedic devices, cardiac devices, surgical mesh, and vein filters. Steven routinely handles matters in multidistrict litigation and state-court coordination proceedings, and has argued appeals in state and federal court.
He is also active in litigation and counseling involving the protection and use of private information. He recently defeated class certification in a health care data privacy class action and secured a landmark opinion in the California Court of Appeal interpreting California’s laws protecting private health information.
Steven is an elected member of the firm’s Executive Committee, its governing board. He is a regular contributor to the award-winning Drug and Device Law Blog, for which he has written hundreds of original articles on topics affecting the industry.
