Specialty Litigation Department of the Year – Products Liability
Reed Smith’s U.S. Products Liability Practice includes some 100 experienced lawyers in 10 of the firm’s 18 U.S. offices, making it one of the few genuinely national product liability practices in Big Law.
This multi-team practice has scored several recent victories in complex, long-running multidistrict litigations involving cutting-edge issues, from opioids and other pharmaceuticals, to hernia mesh implants and other medical devices.
Regional Litigation Department of the Year – Pennsylvania
The largest and oldest law firm in Pennsylvania, Reed Smith represents half of the largest employers in the Commonwealth. The firm’s more than 150 Pittsburgh- and Philadelphia-based litigators are key players in an international team of more than 1,000 attorneys worldwide handling some of the most complex, high-stakes disputes of our time.
In the past year, Reed Smith’s Pennsylvania litigators have achieved victories in several cutting-edge class actions and multidistrict litigations—from matters involving the opioid crisis and COVID-19 business interruption cases, to crucial challenges to state and federal law.
Best Use of Technology
Reed Smith is shortlisted for its award-winning Arbitration Pricing Calculator, a first-of-its-kind mobile app designed to help arbitration professionals quickly and accurately estimate the costs of arbitration at more than 40 key arbitral institutions around the world.
The app was designed by Singapore-based International Arbitration partner Timothy Cooke, who was previously named Innovator of the Year at the 2023 Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards.
Young Lawyers of the Year – Litigation
Partner Joseph Mahady is currently one of the lead trial lawyers in the biggest litigation the country has ever seen. This high-stakes litigation stems from the opioid addiction epidemic ravaging America. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed in courts around the country against opioid manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies, many consolidated in a massive federal MDL.
Mahady is front-and-center in this historic litigation, as one of the lead trial lawyers defending major U.S. drug distributor AmerisourceBergen. In 2022, a stunning win for AmerisourceBergen in the bellwether trial of distributors as defendants – and the first municipality-led case of the MDL to proceed to trial – made headlines nationwide.
Young Lawyers of the Year – Beyond Practice
Chicago-based appellate partner Patrick Yingling is recognized by courts nationwide for his excellence in representation, briefing and arguments.
The Chicago Bar Association recently awarded Yingling with its annual Exceptional Young Lawyer Award in recognition of his commitment to pro bono, which includes more than 750 hours devoted annually to matters advancing social justice, equity and the rule of law; and recent landmark victories in LGBTQ+, immigration and voting rights cases.
