Throughout her career, Elizabeth Carder-Thompson of Reed Smith says there have been few female mentors she could look to.

“There were only 30 women in my whole law school class,” she said. “I think I was the fourth or fifth woman at (Pierson, Ball & Dowd).”

Even though she didn’t map out her career in health law, Carder-Thompson is thankful about where she ended up. She said that young women embarking in the field should keep a sense of humor and remain mindful of how important the work can be.

“The health care world is fascinating—byzantine, perhaps, but fascinating—and when all is said and done, health care matters. People's lives are at stake. Sometimes the issues can be deeply moving, and it can be infinitely satisfying to play a part in making changes for the good.”
