Global law firm Reed Smith has been ranked in IAM Patent 1000 2016, cited as “a global powerhouse” in the intellectual property market. A number of lawyers across the firm’s IP practice in the US and across Europe are also listed in IAM’s individual rankings, reflecting the strength of the firm’s trans-Atlantic and pan-European patent practice.

IAM is a leading business media platform for professionals in the intellectual property industry. The IAM 1000, published annually, identifies the top 1,000 leading patent practitioners throughout the world.

Reed Smith is ranked as a top firm for litigation in France and the United States: Pennsylvania.

According to IAM, “Drawing on the firm’s cross-border capabilities and extensive support network to superb effect, the Paris team shines brightest on multi-jurisdictional enforcement matters – as its game-changing performances before both national and European courts bear out.”

In Pennsylvania, “The phalanx of tenacious trial lawyers at international outfit Reed Smith make the firm a force to be reckoned with in bet-the-farm disputes.”

Lawyers individually ranked for Europe include Jonathan Radcliffe (London); Anette Gärtner (Frankfurt); and Marina Cousté and François Jonquères (Paris).

In the United States, Peter J. Chassman and Nicolas G. Barzoukas (Texas); Rudy E. Hutz (Delaware); and Kirsten R. Rydstrom (Pennsylvania) are all individually ranked.

In addition, Marc Kaufman (Washington D.C.) is ranked as an IP Strategist by IAM Strategy 300 2016, which identifies the individuals leading the way in the development and implementation of strategies that maximise the value of IP portfolios.

Globally, Reed Smith's Intellectual Property, Information & Innovation Group comprises more than 100 lawyers and handles a wide range of IP matters involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, unfair competition and trade secrets, transactions, and domain name disputes.

The IAM rankings reflect the increasing strength of the group, which has been working to enhance its European platform and its U.S. offering over the past year. In particular, following the arrival of partners Jonathan Radcliffe (London) and Anette Gärtner (Frankfurt), the European IP team now consists of nearly 20 lawyers across London, Paris, Munich and Frankfurt.

The firm’s U.S. team was significantly bolstered last year following the appointments of counsel Rudy E. Hutz, and partners R. Eric Hutz, Eric Evain, Ph.D (all Wilmington), Peter Chassman and Kevin Cadwell (both Houston). It has continued to strengthen its presence with the recent arrivals of partners Nicolas Barzoukas and Joshua Davis (both Houston), and Lisa Chiarini (New York).

According to the IAM 1000, “global powerhouse Reed Smith has reaped real dividends by fine tuning its traditional IP practice to the needs of a tech-driven economy. It has spiced up its patent offering with know-how gleaned from ancillary fields, including financial services, software, electronics and antitrust”.
