On July 7, 2020, as part of the fourth annual (and first virtual) Paris Arbitration Week, Reed Smith’s international arbitration practice hosted a webinar discussion entitled “Arbitration in Africa and the role of State courts”. This event was one of a series of seminars and academic debates held during the week across Paris, bringing together thought leaders in international arbitration to address a wide array of topics and important developments in the field of international arbitration. The highlights are now published and we are delighted to make these available to you.
The current practice on the African continent is very diverse. In certain regions and jurisdictions the outcome is very much encouraging with significant cooperation between arbitration and the State. In other regions, however, misunderstanding and distrust is the norm, preventing the harmonious co-existence between arbitration and litigation.
Our webinar, conducted in English and French, explored and debated these complex, fast-moving issues, from the viewpoint of various jurisdictions of both Francophone and Anglophone Africa. Reed Smith partner Clément Fouchard was joined by:
- Abayomi Okubote, International Arbitration Practice team lead, Olaniwun Ajayi LP
- Leyou Tameru, Legal consultant and founder of I-Arb Africa
- Mamadou Konaté, Business lawyer, registered Arbitrator
- Susan Kimani, MIAC Co-Registrar and PCA Legal Counsel
