Julie is an Environment, Health and Safety lawyer with experience in projects, transactions, real estate, litigation and regulatory, advising clients across many sectors and practice groups. Before specialising in environmental law in 2006, she worked on a broad range of finance and corporate transactions.
Julie joined Reed Smith in 2023 from Herbert Smith Freehills, having previously worked for Latham & Watkins, and qualifying in 1995 with Allen & Overy.
She has particular experience within the energy sphere (power, and all aspects of the oil and gas value chain), mining (UK and Africa), infrastructure and logistics, chemicals manufacture and trading and the UK water industry. She has also worked in-house on secondment to the HSSE Legal team at BP. She also has years of experience in corporate M&A and real estate transactions. Her litigation experience includes the leading Supreme Court case on parent company liability for the actions of their overseas subsidiaries (Lungowe v. Vedanta Resources).
Julie is ranked as a Leading Individual in environment law by Legal 500 UK and as a Star Associate by Chambers UK.
She sits in London as part of the ENR Group and the global EHS team, where her key focuses are on the carbon markets, sustainability and ESG, Net Zero, renewables, decarbonisation and carbon capture and the development of future energy sources, including hydrogen and geothermal. She is also interested in promotion of the Circular Economy and the regulation of plastics and chemicals.
Julie is a member of the UK Environmental Lawyers Association and the City of London Law Society Environment committee.
She is a Nottingham law graduate with a Masters' degree in European and International environmental law from University College London.
