In a move that was expected for weeks, the New York City Council on May 8, 2013 finally passed—by an overwhelming majority—a bill requiring city employers to provide employees with five days of annual paid sick leave, effective (for most employers) April 1, 2014. The 45–3 vote essentially ensures that the anticipated veto from Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be overridden.
