He has extensive experience in all phases of domestic and international patent prosecution, having prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in computing, electrical, and mechanical technologies. Sonny uses his background in computer science to work directly with corporate counsels, chief technology officers, and inventors to identify valuable IP, devise patent protection strategies, analyze competitive landscapes, and actively manage and prosecute multinational patent portfolios. Sonny’s practice involves application preparation, responding to communications from the Patent Office, ex parte appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), petitions, reissues, foreign jurisdictions, and all facets of the law regarding patentable subject matter, novelty and obviousness, and written description and enablement.

Sonny also has significant experience with post-grant trials before the PTAB and has represented both patent owners and petitioners in these proceedings. He has successfully represented clients in numerous post-grant proceedings, including inter partes review, covered business method review, ex parte reexamination, and inter partes reexamination. This representation has involved researching and/or briefing arguments in multiple different issue areas that come before the PTAB, including real-parties-in-interest, time barred petitions, PTAB discretion to deny petitions, motions for additional discovery, claim construction, evidentiary objections, public accessibility of alleged prior art, covered business method review eligibility, and substantive grounds pertaining to subject matter eligibility, novelty, and obviousness.

Sonny’s practice also includes counseling clients on IP issues and patent litigation. His counseling practice includes advising clients on issues pertaining to due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, freedom to operate, copyrights and copyright registration, and open source software licensing and best practices. His litigation experience includes working with clients to develop non-infringement theories, developing claim construction positions and arguments, drafting counter-party communications, and preparing invalidity contentions and other trial briefs.
