Cindy is Reed Smith’s global head of legal personnel and former chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment Group; she serves as the firm's general counsel for employment and previously was the firm’s managing partner in New York. Cindy exclusively represents management across a broad range of critical business activities through the lens of labor and employment law. She is an all-purpose adviser on legal and reputational issues who is committed to delivering practical, business-oriented results to clients.
Cindy’s practice includes litigation, counseling, arbitration and mediation with regard to employment discrimination, harassment, restrictive covenants and wage-hour compliance.
Cindy advises C-Suite executives, general counsel and human resources professionals on strategies and training to help avoid litigation and government investigations and provides practical advice on all employment-related issues in today’s business world, including employee discharge and discipline, reductions-in-force, employment policies and procedures, and compliance with federal, state and local employment and wage & hour laws.
She regularly conducts training programs on the full spectrum of employment compliance issues as well as on diversity issues. She has also counseled numerous companies in the planning and execution of reductions-in-force, mergers, and other organizational changes affecting employees.
Clients regularly call on Cindy to conduct and advise on internal investigations, and to provide advice on compliance with various laws affecting the workplace including Title VII, the ADEA, ADA, FMLA, FLSA and state wage and hour laws. She represents clients in federal and state law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including with the U.S. Department of Labor.
With a deep understanding of the intricate legal landscape surrounding restrictive covenants, Cindy has successfully negotiated and drafted non-compete agreements tailored to clients' specific needs and industries and advises on non-compete related disputes.
Cindy also has extensive experience litigating employment disputes of all types. She has served as lead counsel in several federal and state trials involving allegations of discrimination, retaliation, constitutional violations, as well as contract and tort claims. Adept at counseling clients at every turn of the litigation process, Cindy employs a creative mix of litigation and business skills to determine which cases should be litigated in court, which should be resolved in some alternative forum and which can and should be settled.
Cindy also advises clients on all aspects of employment-related issues in corporate transactions.
She conducts diligence to determine employment implications for the buyer or seller; negotiates executive employment agreements; and conducts workforce compliance audits to help employers improve their standing for acquisition. She has also counseled numerous companies in the planning and execution of reductions-in-force, mergers, and other organizational changes affecting employees.
