James is the chair of the firm’s Business and Finance Department, a team of more than 900 attorneys globally, across six practice and industry groups. He is a former chair of the U.S. Corporate Group, which focuses on corporate and securities, tax, benefits, executive compensation and wealth planning. He is also a former co-chair of the Global Corporate Group.
His practice focuses on advising clients on a wide range of tax matters with particular emphasis on domestic and international corporate transactions, such as mergers, acquisitions and divestitures including tax-free spin-offs, restructurings, tax-free reorganizations, leveraged buyouts (including “going private” transactions) and joint ventures. In addition, James advises on the formation and operation of partnerships and private investment vehicles (including private equity and hedge funds) and their general partners and advisors, and partnership restructurings, acquisitions and divestitures. James has represented real estate developers, and domestic and foreign investors in real estate. James also advises on offerings of debt, equity, and other financial instruments, as well as lending transactions.
