(February 10, 2009, San Francisco, CA) – The Daily Journal has selected Reed Smith partner Dan Cody as one of the “Top 20” attorneys in California under the age of 40. Cody practices health care regulatory law as a member of the Life Sciences Health Industry Group in the San Francisco office of Reed Smith LLP, one of the 15 largest law firms in the world.
Dan’s selection on the Daily Journal’s 2009 “20 Under 40” listing was based on his many recent practice successes. These include his representations of a hospital in a civil False Claims Act investigation of Medicare claims submitted in connection with a clinical trial, and his work on behalf of a public hospital company in a $150 million high yield bond offering and second offering of $4.5 million in common stock.
Over the past two years, Dan has also served as special health care counsel and successfully completed five major cutting-edge deals with an aggregate value of some $75-$100 million. These deals involved joint ventures between physicians and hospitals nationwide for a United States-based provider of high-acuity services focused on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
In September 2008, Nightingale‘s Healthcare News, a monthly health care industry publication, selected Dan as one of 12 legal professionals in the country to be named “2008 Outstanding Young Healthcare Lawyer.“
Dan joined Reed Smith’s Washington, D.C., office in 1998, after graduating from William and Mary School of Law. He transferred to the firm’s San Francisco office in 2002, and has since established himself as a leading health care attorney on the West Coast. Dan became a partner at Reed Smith in 2005.
Dan’s community service is health-focused as well: He is a Board member of the San Francisco Public Health Foundation, the fiscal agent of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and member of the Board of the National Health Law Program, which delivers legal services and serves as a clearinghouse of information for low-income individuals and their health care needs.
He also serves as a Council Member of the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section, and speaks and publishes frequently on health topics for professional audiences. In 2007, Dan co-authored A Practical Guide to Medicare Appeals, a well-received publication in the American Bar Association’s Practical Guide Series. He is admitted to the bar in California, New York and Washington, D.C.
