California Academy of Appellate Lawyers

Ray Cardozo, a partner and appellate specialist at Reed Smith, has been elected Secretary-Treasurer of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the nation’s oldest lawyers’ organization dedicated to appellate practice. He will become Academy President in 2021.

Ray has been a member of the invitation-only Academy since 2007. He is also a member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, and is certified as a specialist in appellate law by the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. Ray has had lead responsibility for more than 200 appellate matters in the state and federal courts, and has argued numerous cases before the United States Supreme Court, the California Courts of Appeal and Supreme Court, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Chambers and Legal 500 publications have ranked Ray as among the top in his field, and he has repeatedly been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers In America.

A 1994 graduate of the University of California-Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law, Ray has served as the Global Chair of Reed Smith’s Litigation Department, as a member of the firm’s Senior Management team, as the San Francisco Office Managing Partner, as the Practice Group Leader of the firmwide Appellate Group, and as a member of the firm's Diversity Committee. Before joining Reed Smith, he served for many years as a Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the California Attorney General.
