Dan currently serves as Immediate Past Chair of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. He is a past Chair of the Pittsburgh CLO, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, Penn’s Southwest Association, the Pennsylvania Lawyer’s Fund for Client Security, the Committee for Mellon Square, the Regional Air Service Partnership, the CLO Next Generation Campaign, CLO Cabaret Theater, CLO Academy of Musical Theater, the Allegheny County Bar Association Antitrust and Class Action Committee and the American Bar Association Antitrust Section Civil Practice Committee. He formerly served as a director of RTI International Metals, Inc.; Océ-USA Holdings, Inc.; HERC Development, Inc.; the Mon Valley Community Investment Fund; the Allegheny Conference on Community Development; the Duquesne Club; the United Way; the Boy Scouts; the Judicial Council of Pennsylvania; the Pittsburgh Glass Center; and the American Civil Liberties Union. He served for many years on the Steering Committee of the Pro Bono Institute; on the Visiting Committee of the University of Chicago Law School; in the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County; and on the Allegheny County Democratic Committee.

As a member of the statutory Charter Drafting Committee, he was instrumental in writing and securing voter approval for the Allegheny County Home Rule Charter, which was adopted by referendum in 1998. He is a recipient of the Senator John Heinz Award for Community Service and the League of Women Voters Good Government Award.

In 2019, Dan was the volunteer leader of the successful effort by referendum to amend the City of Pittsburgh Home Rule Charter to create a dedicated Parks Trust funded by new tax revenues.

In 2021, Dan received both the 25th Anniversary Mary Schenley Medal for Parks Stewardship and the 75th Anniversary CLOE award for contributions to the arts in Western Pennsylvania.
