Michael is counsel in the Intellectual Property Group. His practice includes patent litigation in federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission, inter partes reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, patent portfolio analysis, and other aspects of intellectual property law. Michael holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in electrical engineering and worked as an engineer for eight years in industry prior to law school. Michael’s background provides him with a strong foundation for gaining a deep understanding of the complicated technologies involved in his cases and to enable him to work directly and efficiently with technical witnesses and experts.
Michael has worked with a wide range of technologies in the fields of electronics and telecommunications, including cloud computing and storage, remote data applications, and network infrastructure. Michael has also worked on technologies including natural gas compression, autonomous vehicles, and sensing and refinery control systems. In litigation, Michael has worked closely with clients, co-counsel, and technical experts on all aspects of his cases, including non/infringement, in/validity, and claim construction. Michael also has extensive experience with discovery, and particular expertise in analysing and working with computer source code. Michael’s has trial experience as well – in 2012, he was a member of a four attorney defense team in Fujitsu v. Belkin, et al., which won a three-week jury trial, garnering a “Defense Verdict of the Year” award by the industry press.
Outside of litigation, Michael has prepared petitions for inter partes reviews (IPRs) and has analyzed patent portfolios for possible acquisition and for application to specific targets. Michael has also advised clients on their trademark portfolios, prosecuted U.S. and international trademark applications, and assisted clients in the enforcement of trademark and copyrights. He has represented clients in both U.S. and international trademark opposition practice in the U.S., European Community (CTM), Canada and Japan.
