Since passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”) in June 2018, lawyers, industry stakeholders, and consumers have been counting down the days to the January 1, 2020 effective date. Multiple amendments have moved through the California legislature and a new ballot initiative has been introduced. On September 13 the California State Senate passed five amendments to the CCPA. Those amendments now await the Governor’s signature. In addition, the California Attorney General’s office recently indicated its intent to complete the CCPA’s required rulemaking proceeding prior to January 1, 2020.
