(Nov. 1, 2010, Falls Church, VA) - Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of another partner in its firmwide Intellectual Property Group. Brad R. Newberg, formerly senior counsel in the Northern Virginia office of Holland & Knight, has joined Reed Smith's Falls Church office, effective immediately.
"Brad is expert in counseling clients and deploying strategies that prevent piracy and copyright infringement," said Jim Hultquist, Chair of Reed Smith's Intellectual Property Group. "His skills will immediately enhance our Group's litigation capabilities, adding a specialty that is increasingly in demand. In particular, Brad's knowledge of the risks associated with social media and how to avoid and mitigate these risks will be invaluable to our clients in every sector."
IP strategist Marc Kaufman joined the IP Group in the firm's D.C. office in late August. With the addition of Mr. Kaufman and Mr. Newberg, the Group has nearly 100 lawyers and spans the globe, providing counsel and litigation services throughout the U.S., Europe, Middle East and Asia.
"Reed Smith's breadth of practice expertise, its global footprint, and its deep bench of intellectual property experts were among the factors that attracted me to the firm," said Mr. Newberg. "With Reed Smith's IP strength and platform, I can handle any matter for my clients, regardless of size or complexity; I also look forward to collaborating with members of the firm in practices such as advertising, entertainment and media that have significant cross-over with IP."
Mr. Newberg has extensive copyright and trademark experience, including service as lead counsel on many cases, representing clients before trial and appellate federal courts, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panels, the Copyright Royalty Tribunal, and state courts. He also has considerable experience in analyzing potential damages awards in trademark and copyright cases and has served as an expert in both copyright and trademark cases. He is a frequent speaker on those topics, as well as on all aspects of social media, a field where he regularly counsels clients.
Prior to joining Holland and Knight, Mr. Newberg was a partner at Newberg & Winters LLP, in Washington, D.C., which he co-founded in 2005. Before that, he was an associate in the Washington, D.C., office of Arnold & Porter, where he focused on intellectual property litigation. Prior to joining Arnold & Porter, Mr. Newberg served a two-year clerkship with the Hon. Louis L. Stanton, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.
"Brad is a welcome addition to our Falls Church office," said Karen Fagelson, Reed Smith's Falls Church Office Managing Partner. "With more than 12,000 technology companies, and more technology workers than any other region of the country, Northern Virginia is one of the leaders in the knowledge economy, and the demand for top IP professionals is high. His expertise and skills will definitely help us stay in front of the growth in this key market."
Mr. Newberg earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated cum laude and was the Articles Editor of the Penn Law Review. He also has two undergraduate degrees in economics from Penn, including a degree from Penn's Wharton School of Business. Mr. Newberg is admitted to the Bar in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
