“Jay is a consummate employment attorney with a versatile range of skillsets, spanning both counseling and litigation experience,” said Betty S.W. Graumlich, global practice leader for Reed Smith’s Labor & Employment practice. “He provides advice and counsel with a focus on dispute avoidance, including on mergers and acquisitions. And he’s fully prepared to take matters all the way through trial when that’s needed.”
Glunt’s background includes working lockstep with clients in a proactive fashion to avoid and minimize the distraction of employment claims. Glunt calls this the “guardrail” aspect of his practice. He protects clients from missteps in a variety of areas, such as reductions in force, restructurings, corporate deals, workplace investigations, wage & hour compliance, best practices for policies and procedures, hire/fire and disciplinary decisions, work/ family balance issues, and maintaining compliance generally with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
“When we can’t avoid the fight, or when avoidance doesn’t solve the problem, we use the court system to obtain the results we need,” said Glunt. His problem-solver approach led him to Reed Smith. “I listen to my clients. I want to help solve all of their business and legal challenges,” said Glunt, “not just labor and employment matters. Reed Smith’s platform and deep bench in a great range of practice areas allow me to have a more complete relationship with my clients. And the firm’s roots in the business community are uniquely deep and strong. I see a network here that’s exciting to be involved with.”
Glunt is known for representing corporations in Fair Labor Standards Act matters, which are increasing in number and complexity among Reed Smith’s clients, including in the financial services industry. He is conversant with Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial aid, capabilities well aligned with Reed Smith’s growing Title IX practice. He has significant experience with matters relating to the discovery of electronically stored information, and has earned recognition from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to serve as an e-discovery special master when appointed by the court.
“Adding Jay to our existing strong senior team of employment attorneys in Pittsburgh is a win for our clients and for our firm,” said Casey Ryan, the firm’s global head of legal personnel and a partner in the firm’s employment practice in Pittsburgh. “We are delighted to welcome him as a colleague.”
“Jay has a strong reputation in this region, and is a lawyer whose labor and employment work we already know well and appreciate,” said Ron Francis, Reed Smith’s Pittsburgh Office Managing Partner. “His community service commitment and involvement is enviable and a great fit for this office.”
Glunt has served as a member of a number of boards, including the Dormont Zoning Hearing Board, the Board of Sustainable Pittsburgh, and Pennsylvania’s Early Learning Investment Commission. His community service includes membership in the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's Office Recruitment and Retention Committee, which works to position the city’s downtown as a safe and welcoming environment for all employers. Since 2012, Glunt has taught Negotiation Skills each spring semester at Duquesne Law School.
