Reed Smith was honored for the firm’s longstanding commitment to NIJC, pro bono contributions to numerous individual NIJC cases, a class action lawsuit that successfully challenged the U.S. government’s immigration detention policies, and its global refugee protection project.
According to the NJIC:
Reed Smith’s long-standing commitment to pro bono work has provided life-changing protection to immigrants and their families and expanded resources for NIJC staff and clients. Reed Smith has played a tremendous role in advancing human rights domestically and internationally. Reed Smith successfully challenged illegal delays in the screenings of detained individuals seeking protection and applied best practices in refugee protection internationally by sending pro bono attorneys overseas to provide legal advocacy and training.
The award was given to Reed Smith yesterday in Chicago at the National Immigrant Justice Center’s Human Rights Awards luncheon, which has honored human rights champions and celebrated the contributions of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders since 2000. Each year the event attracts nearly 1,000 Chicago civil leaders, professionals, attorneys, elected officials, and philanthropists.
Heartland Alliance's National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) is dedicated to ensuring human rights protections and access to justice for all immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
