An experienced business counselor and litigator, Michael advises global financial institutions, technology companies, and manufacturers to local start-ups and private equity/venture capital firms in a broad range of litigation, compliance, corporate governance, and transactional matters.
Michael’s litigation practice focuses on complex business and consumer class action defense. His practice includes both representing and counseling clients in both domestic and international commercial disputes, including specifically contract disputes, business torts, intellectual property claims, and alleged data privacy and security violations.
Michael’s class action practice regularly involves sensitive consumer information in defense of statutory claims covering the use and disclosure of financial, health and other protected information, (such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Illinois Biometric Information Act, and the California Consumer Privacy Act). Michael’s litigation practice has put him in federal and state courts throughout the country.
Michael also serves in a general counsel role to companies forming and operating new or on-going ventures. He has significant experience in negotiating and preparing new business agreements, assisting clients with employment, risk management, and privacy matters, and counseling clients operating in regulated industries (such as healthcare and banking) on a wide-variety of compliance issues.
Michael also dedicates significant time to professional, civic, and pro bono matters.
Michael is the past chair of the Federal Civil Practice Committee of the Chicago Bar Association (2016-2017).
