Charles Hewetson is the co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Commercial Disputes Group and the former co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Regulatory Enforcement Group. He focuses on regulatory investigations and enforcement proceedings, financial services disputes, professional negligence claims and general commercial litigation.
Charles has a strong track record of defending leading accountants and lawyers in relation to high profile professional negligence claims. In the last 12 months he has acted in a number of significant claims, including for a big 4 accountant in a substantial claim arising from a provision for an environmental liability in a set of audited accounts and for a Magic Circle law firm in a substantial claim arising from losses suffered by its client in Turkey.
Charles’ focus on the financial services sector extends to litigation defence and his regulatory investigations and enforcement practice. Charles regularly represents both global institutions and senior individuals in connection with FCA and CFTC proceedings. He notably worked to defend a senior bank executive in regulatory proceedings arising from the LIBOR investigation.
